The Great Wall of China In China there is an old saying that goes “you are not a man until you have been to the Great Wall!” This famous ‘icon’ stretches over 3,000 kilometres from the Shanhaiguan Pass on the eastern coast to the Jiayuguan Pass in the Gobi Desert. The first Emperor to unify all of China in 221 BC, Qin Shihuang, had a workforce of up to a million people link previously existing walls from smaller kingdoms and build new sections, in order to keep out northern invaders. |

The Inca Trail - Peru This is deservedly the most famous footpath in South America. It has everything: gorgeous mountain scenery, cloudforest and lush sub-tropical vegetation with numerous species of flowers, a stunning destination (Machu Picchu) and, above all, the Inca remains that give the trail its name. There are Inca paving stones, Inca stairways, an Inca tunnel, and of course the ruins: Runkuracay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, Huiñay Huayna and Machu Picchu itself. |

Madeira – Pearl of the Atlantic The mountainous island of Madeira lies in the Atlantic Ocean off the Moroccan coast. Its cragged peaks are merely the tip of a gigantic volcano that plunges 4000m (13,200ft) below sea level to the ocean floor. Madeira derives its name from the forests that covered the uninhabited island when the first seafarers arrived in 1351 – they named it “The Island of Wood” (Madeira = wood in Portuguese). Over 6 days we will experience the great diversity of walking in Maderia from the High Mountain Range, to the Great Levadas and onto the Coastal Paths. |
